3 The text begins abruptly and the †syntax is quite complex. It is not completely clear whether the pronouns “his,” “him,” and “he” in verses 3–4 refer always to God the Father, always to Christ, or variously to one and then the other. I will adopt what I believe is the best reading, namely, that the opening phrase refers to the Father and that the remainder refers to Christ. What is promised comes to us from the Father through the Son. Peter opens with broad strokes: His divine power has bestowed
