It is not completely clear whether the pronouns “his,” “him,” and “he” in verses 3–4 refer always to God the Father, always to Christ, or variously to one and then the other. I will adopt what I believe is the best reading, namely, that the opening phrase refers to the Father and that the remainder refers to Christ.
